Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Since her father's death the family, it was taken care of by her grandmother, mom as well as godparents. As a child Ford was diagnosed with an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to associations with words. Ford started to become interested in acting as a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford gained entry to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she wasn't a good fit there. Ford applied again to Central School of Speech and Drama and on her fourth application she was eventually accepted. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of her fellow students. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV shows including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning during the Nineties. Tate also regularly worked in theatre and eventually joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season of 2000-2001. Tate began to gain attention because of her stand-up comedic performances in the year 1996.
